More Focused Scan Tool Diagnostics
The Scan Tool section was built using a completely different approach – to show the best PIDs, controls and other Scan Tool functions to use for each diagnosis. Instead of simply explaining Scan Tool functions, we’ve organized this section by OBD II Monitors and trouble codes. This may sound like basic OBD II training, but it’s not. Rather, it gives technicians a very specific diagnostic strategy based on how the PCM determines that a trouble code needs to be set and what PIDs and controls are supported for each system variation. In other words, this isn’t a button-pushing class. There are dozens of examples of this strategy in action, diagnosing the most common powertrain codes including:
- P0171 & other Fuel Trim codes
- EVAP leak and other functional failure codes
- Misfire code isolation techniques
- EGR functional and flow codes
- O2 and Air/Fuel sensor codes
Dealing with Failed Vehicle Inspection Reports
Manufacturers don’t publish flow charts for ‘failed emissions test’. We’re left to test ‘everything’ in a linear diagnostic path that has no focus. To solve this problem, we’ve created a 1-page flow chart that divides all emissions failures into ‘Fuel Control Faults’ and ‘Emissions Control Faults’. It’s hard to ‘eyeball’ the difference until you consider Lambda or Air/Fuel ratio calculations, but the difference is critical to a quick solution.
This unique strategy will help technicians quickly determine of the vehicle is in fuel control. If not, then the diagnosis shifts to only causes that can push the Lambda outside of the acceptable range. If it’s in range, or after a diagnosis and repair to get it in range, it’s time to find out what emissions control failure is responsible for the high emissions. This two-stage approach prevents wasted diagnostic steps and futile parts replacement, but also manages the customer’s expectations by explaining that once fuel control is established, the vehicle may or may not still have an emissions control fault.
